What does the future hold for Leeds United?

Despite losing 2-1 to Birmingham City at Elland Road on Saturday, Leeds United have still had a fantastic start to the season.

The Yorkshire club are currently top of the Championship table on goal difference with 18 points, and are on course to make a real push for promotion.

Under Marcelo Bielsa, who was appointed manager in the summer, Leeds have matched their good results with some impressive displays by playing out of defence, pressing aggressively and attacking in numbers in a way that has become expected of a Bielsa team.

Nevertheless, the Argentinian coach has played down his side’s promotion credentials despite the manner in which they have begun the new campaign.

Speaking after Leeds’ 1-1 draw with Millwall at The Den earlier this month, Bielsa said (via TEAMtalk): “Any conclusion you draw now would not be solid. Football is a game of surprises. If you take the last games for all the teams and look at the results, it’s very hard to draw conclusions.”

Regardless of what happens come May, though, Leeds certainly have the foundations necessary to finally make that final step and return to English football’s top flight.

With Andrea Radrizzani now pulling the strings from behind the scenes, the conditions are there for Bielsa and co to have a successful season, and the Italian owner has made it clear what his plans for the club are.

“I am giving a maximum of five years to be in the Premier League,” Radrizzani told the Guardian last year. “If I go up I’m not selling. I am young, I can stay here for 20 years and enjoy. It’s a dream; why build all of this if I then have to leave?”

With all of the above in mind, it is truly an exciting time for Leeds supporters after years of chaos and uncertainty at the club.

The appointment of Bielsa and Radrizzani’s confession of trying to lure Premier League and Serie A title winner Antonio Conte to Elland Road with a £20m offer (via Sky Sports) is some statement.

Ultimately, with Bielsa’s work on the pitch and Radrizzani’s from the boardroom, promotion back to the Premier League should be in sight for Leeds.
