Leeds United have had a fantastic start to the Championship season with manager Marcelo Bielsa’s positive influence on the club’s players clearly visible in this early part of the campaign.
One individual, however, who has yet to blossom under the Argentinian coach’s tutelage is Lewis Baker.
Baker arrived at Elland Road on loan from Chelsea at the end of June but has failed to make any real impact at his new club so far.
The 23-year-old has not started a single Championship game and, while the season is still young, the signs are looking worrying for Baker and his overall development as a footballer.
Last year, Baker spent the campaign with Middlesbrough in a loan spell that did not result in much for the England U21 international.
He barely featured for the club and, ultimately, probably wasted a year of his career at the Riverside.
Baker will be desperate for things to turn out differently at Elland Road but, given how well Leeds are playing in this moment of time, it is difficult to see how the Chelsea youth product can break into the team.
That being said, Baker certainly has the ability to make a significant contribution to Leeds’ promotion charge.
Be it from the No.10 position or deeper in central midfield, Baker is a player capable of opening up a defence with a single pass or firing an accurate long-shot towards goal.
During the 2016/17 season in the Eredivisie at Vitesse, Baker was able to reach double figures and his performances overall — in one of Europe’s top football divisions — were impressive.
For whatever reason, though, Baker has not been able to transfer that form into the Championship despite the ability he possesses.
With that in mind, should things not work out at Leeds come the end of the season, Baker should strongly consider a move to another European league going forward, one where his attributes may be better suited to.
Baker had great success in the Eredivisie, and it would not be a surprise to see him flourish in another similar division such as the Bundesliga where other young English players have gone to in the past year to continue their development.Like what the TT have on offer?
