Leeds United have been linked with a move for a Premier League goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
Reports from En Cancha claim that Marcelo Bielsa is a big fan of the footwork of Claudio Bravo and could make a move for him as a replacement for Kiko Casilla. The publication are also saying that the Chile international has become accustomed to life in England.
What has become very apparent over the course of his career in Yorkshire is that the former Real Madrid ‘keeper needs to be replaced. Whether the Whites achieve promotion to the Premier League or not, Casilla has become a liability having made a raft of mistakes during his time with the side. Against Wigan Athletic, the Spaniard dropped a clanger as he was chipped by a deflected corner when attempting to come out and clear the ball. He was roundly criticised with former player Noel Whelan claiming ‘you get what you paid for’ with regards to his error (via Football Insider).
Bravo’s passing would make him the ideal candidate for the outfit’s possession brand of football with the Chilean averaging a similar amount of passes per game to Casilla. However, he comes out on top when looking at who possess the greater range of passing, averaging over five long balls per league game to 33-year-old’s 4.6.
What is more important than his ability is the number of trophies he’s won during his career with Barcelona and Manchester City, amassing 13 major honours. And it’s not just club football where he’s proved successful, captaining Chile to back-to-back Copa America titles in 2015 and 2016 (via Transfermarkt).
In all honesty, Casilla isn’t the best of options for the Whites and the quicker he is replaced the better for the Elland Road team. His constant mistakes, including a huge one in the play-off semi-final loss to Derby County last year, shows he isn’t up to the task.
Should Leeds sign Claudio Bravo?
As well as his superiority with the ball at his feet and his massive trophy haul, the City number two also has the added bonus of having actually played in the English top-flight, just one more reason why a move for him would be a no-brainer if promotion is achieved.
