Head to Burton, get the three points, come back promoted to the Championship. This was supposed to be the plan, but as well know, it all went horribly wrong.
A shock 2-1 defeat to Burton Albion after taking the lead through League One Player of the Season James Collins has severally damaged not just Luton’s title hopes, but their prospects of promotion entirely.
With Barnsley winning on the weekend to bring them on level points with the Hatters and Sunderland and Portsmouth playing to a draw against each other, setting Pompey up for the title should they win their final games, Luton have thrown away what was an eight-point lead of title not too long ago to now having a realistic possibility of finishing outside the top-two and dropping into the play-off positions.
Luton, who managed a 28-game unbeaten run and have been one of the most prolific and defensively solid teams in the Football League this season, have stumbled at the worse possible time, and with one game remaining for them, they have to be ready to give it their all and to not let anything get past them.
Three points against Oxford is what it will take for Mick Harford’s side to seal promotion to the Championship and the League One title, but heading into the game on the back of two results that Luton fans couldn’t even fathom it’s unpredictable to call what will happen on Saturday when Luton step onto Kenilworth Road for what many hope is the final time that season.
