Middlesbrough fans in the Transfer Tavern are growing increasingly concerned, and not only because their side are stuck in the relegation zone.
Boro appeared to be taking to the Premier League like a duck to water earlier in the season but they’ve gone on to record the fewest wins – just four – of any side in the division; a return that cost manager Aitor Karanka his job earlier this month.
The Riverside Stadium outfit are now five points from safety and to make matters worse, a number of Premier League sides are eyeing up defender Ben Gibson ahead of the summer according to Mirror Football, with many punters in the Tavern rating him as Boro’s most talented player by some distance.
Gibson’s form earned him a late call-up to Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad following an injury to Chris Smalling and despite Boro’s struggles at the other end, the 24-year-old has played a huge part in them claiming the healthiest goals conceded record outside of the Premier League’s top seven.
According to Mirror Football, Gibson will be a target for the Premier League’s top six in the coming transfer window, with Chelsea and Liverpool particularly keen – although he’s also been scouted by Manchester City this season.
Gibson, nephew of Boro chairman Steve, is famed for his loyalty to the club but seems unlikely to stay if the North East outfit suffer relegation to the Championship.
