Middlesbrough fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the Premier League season with an expectation of survival following manager Aitor Karanka’s exploits in the transfer window this summer.
Now, it seems as though Boro’ will take their transfer business into double-figures as the North East side look to further bolster their squad with a centre-back before the window closes, the Hartlepool Mail reports today.
Despite heavy investment, Karanka has been left short of centre-back options following injuries to Daniel Ayala (ankle) and Bernardo Espinosa (cruciate ligament).
Following the victory at Aston Villa on Saturday, Karanka said: “The better players we have, the more chance we have to stay in the Premier League.
‘We need more (new signings) because we don’t have central defenders. With the injuries we have, we need to improve.
“I don’t want to put all the pressure on Dael Fry, for example, as he’s been brilliant and he has a bright future –he’s improving every single day. But he needs to keep going forward and do the right steps.
“For that reason, we need to bring in more in that area. But we have the nucleus of the team done.”
Many fans in the Tavern have pinned their hopes of survival on new boy Alvaro Negredo and were pleased to him on target at Villa Park.
