Leeds were held to a draw on Friday night as Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough side put in a tough, gritty and physical performance.
Unusually for Marcelo Bielsa side’s so far this season, the Whites were unable to score and only had three shots on target in a game where they had 62% possession.
Leeds found it hard to break down Pulis’ five-man defence with Kemar Roofe unable to get on the scoresheet or have much of an impact.
The result isn’t one that will decide the season but following the game, key man Gaetano Berardi was seen leaving the stadium on crutches and if he has sustained a serious injury, it could be a big blow to Bielsa’s side.
Due to his late return from the World Cup, Pontus Jansson has found it hard to break into the first-team and as of yet has only stepped in for Liam Cooper due to injury.
Many might have expected the Swede to be one of Bielsa’s starting centrebacks but such has been the superb form of Berardi that his absence hasn’t been noticed.
Naturally a full-back, Berardi’s ability with the ball and his pace has been crucial in Bielsa’s high-tempo side.
While it remains unsure how severe his injury is, if the Swiss defender is out for a large amount of time, it could be a huge blow to Bielsa. Jansson is more than able to step in and do a job but he doesn’t have the pace or ability with the ball that Berardi does.
