If being knocked out of the FA Cup by Newport County was not disappointing enough, Middlesbrough could be without two key attackers for their game against Leeds United at the weekend.
Both Britt Assombalonga and Jordan Hugill were forced to withdraw from the defeat to the League Two outfit around the hour mark and have become doubtful for the Championship match.
Tony Pulis revealed that both would need to be assessed before Saturday’s game and was hopeful that they would be available.
Speaking to the Gazette Live, he said: “Britt was stiff in his groins at half-time.
“Jordan has got cramp, I’m hoping, rather than a strain but we won’t know until later in the week.”
Although goals have been quite scarce for Middlesbrough in the Championship this season – just 34 in their 29 matches so far – Assombalonga and Hugill have accounted for the majority of them.
The former has hit nine in his 25 appearances whilst the West Ham United loanee has six in his last 23 matches.
The possibility that both men will be unavailable for the match against Leeds will come as a huge blow to Middlesbrough.
As mentioned, both men have been their main goalscorers this season, whilst the likes of Ashley Fletcher and Rudy Gestede have struggled with the limited opportunities they have had.
To make things worse, Leeds will be looking to bounce back from their own disappointing defeat last weekend to Norwich and could come out all guns blazing against Pulis’ side.
