Middlesbrough fans on Twitter pine for a John Obi Mikel extension

Middlesbrough fans won’t be happy with the events of yesterday. They went into the Championship’s final day knowing that they needed not only a win but for other results to go their way on what was always going to be a tough day. They did their part, but Derby’s win saw them finish 7th, and it looks like the last of John Obi Mikel at the club.

The Nigerian midfielder is only contracted at The Riverside until this summer and given the language that the former Chelsea man used in his post-match interview, he’s already got his eye on his next club, with Boro already sounding like a distant memory in his head. However, the Boro fans will still be desperate to get in the defensive midfielder’s head and convince him to stay.

It was a coy move from Tony Pulis in January when he brought in the experienced head late in the winter transfer window and it’s a move that has certainly been a positive one. For both parties, though, moving on could be for the best as the Northeast club need to start planning for the future and Mikel will want to play out his last few years of football somewhere less intense than the Championship.

The Boro fans will be gutted to lose Mikel, but it seems inevitable he’s going to leave now that they’ve ended the campaign without any chances of promotion.
