Middlesbrough: Pulis should consider signing Luke Freeman in the summer - Middlesbrough

It has been a disappointing year to be a Middlesbrough supporter, hasn’t it?

Having suffered play-off heartbreak last season against Aston Villa, the Smoggies looked almost certain to secure a top-six finish during the 2018/19 campaign under the guidance of Tony Pulis.

Yet a shocking run of results which saw the Yorkshire-based outfit lose six consecutive games between March and April ultimately led to the club having to settle for seventh place in the Championship standings.

With Pulis’ future at the Riverside Stadium expected to be decided over the coming weeks (via BBC Sport), it would be understandable if Boro delayed their transfer activity until this has been resolved.

However, despite the uncertainty surrounding the club, the Smoggies have been linked with a move with one of the Championship’s most impressive attacking midfielders.

According to London Football News, Boro are reportedly interested in signing Queens Park Rangers ace Luke Freeman in the summer.

A mainstay in the Hoops’ starting eleven since joining the club in 2017 from Bristol City, the £3.15m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) enjoyed a superb year at Loftus Road as his eight goals and six assists helped the London-based side secure a nineteenth place finish in the Championship.

Unquestionably the Rs’ best player, without Freeman’s abundance of creativity, they could have quite easily have been spending the next few months preparing for their first season in the third tier in 16 years.

A fantastic midfield technician, the 27-year-old could provide Boro with the spark needed to sustain a push for automatic promotion by giving the likes of Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher some much-needed service in the final third.

Although Freeman would be a valuable addition for the Smoggies, any deal may depend on whether the Hoops’ new manager Mark Warburton is willing to let him leave the club.

If he is made available for transfer by the former Brentford manager, regardless of who is in charge at Boro next season, they must not hesitate in making a move for the midfielder, especially when you consider that Leeds United have also been linked with a possible swoop.

What do you think Smoggies fans? Would you be happy if your side brought in Freeman this summer? If not, who should your club be targeting when the transfer window opens in two months time? Let us know below.
