Having secured the services of goalkeeper Tomas Mejias last week, Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate could now be about to swoop for Arsenal’s Krystian Bielik.
According to the Telegraph, the 39-year-old is reportedly interested in signing the midfielder on a permanent deal from the Gunners with fellow Championship sides Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Brentford also monitoring his current situation at the Emirates.
Bielik still has two years left on his existing deal (via Transfermarkt) but, with the north London club no longer willing to allow its players to enter the final year of their contracts following the recent Aaron Ramsey debacle, they could let the midfielder move on to pastures new if he shows an unwillingness to pen an extension.
Thoroughly impressive whilst on loan at Charlton Athletic last season, Bielik made 34 appearances in all competitions for Lee Bowyer’s side (via Transfermarkt) as they achieved promotion to the Championship via the play-offs.
When you consider that the Smoggies have already witnessed the departures of John Obi Mikel and Muhamed Besic this summer, they could very well be in the market for a new defensive midfielder.
And even though Bielik has only ever played 10 games at Championship level during his career (via Transfermarkt), it appears he could be the man to fill the void left by the aforementioned duo.
By signing Bielik, the club will also be adding some much-needed versatility to their existing roster of players as he is capable of playing at centre-back, too, as per Transfermarkt.
Having excelled in this particular role for Poland at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in which he averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 7.6, the £1.8m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) could end up challenging Aden Flint and Daniel Ayala for a place in Woodgate’s starting eleven if he joins.
Any possible deal may however come down to whether Boro are willing to meet Bielik’s wage demands with Spotrac reporting that he currently earns a weekly salary of £25,000 at Arsenal.
