Having secured the services of goalkeeper Tomas Mejias earlier this month, Middlesbrough may now be about to swoop for Enzo Crivelli.
According to France Football, the Smoggies have reportedly made contact with the forward who is expected to leave SM Caen following the club’s relegation from Ligue 1 in May.
However, with Cardiff City also thought to be in the running for Crivelli’s signature, Boro have a fight on their hands if they are to convince the 24-year-old to make the switch to the Riverside Stadium in the coming weeks.
A regular for SM Caen last season, the Frenchman fired in six goals in 35 appearances in all competitions whilst also registering one assist (via Transfermarkt).
When you consider that the Smoggies already have five forwards at their disposal (via Transfermarkt), Crivelli could find it difficult to make any headway for the club, especially if Britt Assombalonga can repeat his previous escapades under the guidance of Woodgate.
Boro’s leading marksman during the previous campaign, the 26-year-old found the back of the net on 14 occasions in the Championship last season, averaging a WhoScored rating of 6.54 which was marginally better than the former Bordeaux man’s 6.50.
Furthermore, given that Crivelli only managed to record 0.6 shots per game for SM Caen, a total bettered by Assombalonga (2), Ashley Fletcher (2.1) and Rudy Gestede (1) (via WhoScored), he may not be the prolific enough to take the Smoggies to new heights next season.
Having finished 6th in the Championship in 2018 and 7th earlier this year, Boro will undoubtedly be pushing for success once again over the next 10 months.
Yet in order to do so, Woodgate may find it more beneficial to sign a forward with a proven track-record of producing the goods in the second-tier rather than focusing on Crivelli who has never played outside of his homeland (via Transfermarkt).
