According to a recent report from The Northern Echo, Middlesbrough remain hopeful of getting a deal done for both Yannick Bolasie and Muhamed Besic. The Everton duo were linked with a move to the Riverside Stadium during the transfer window only for the deadline to pass on Thursday with neither a Championship player, although Tony Pulis’ men reportedly retain hope they can get something done before the loan window shuts on August 31.
And were the North East outfit to indeed seal a double deal for the Premier League stars, it would surely thrust Boro into Championship promotion contention this season, and thus prove to be a transfer masterstroke.
Ultimately, 25-year-old Besic knows the Riverside Stadium particularly well having spent the second half of last season at the second tier outfit, in which time the midfielder featured 15 times to help Pulis’ men reach the Championship play-offs, and then a further two appearances as they were knocked out by Aston Villa in the semi-finals.
And the Bosnia and Herzegovina international must have done something right in providing greater quality and industry in the Boro midfield for the club to want him back this season, and were he to produce a similar level of performance this time round, he would be a huge asset to Pulis in their quest to sustain a promotion push.
As would Everton teammate Bolasie, who is another whose future at Goodison Park is uncertain following the arrival of Richarlison from Watford during the summer, added to the signing of Theo Walcott back in January.
29-year-old Bolasie only returned from a long-term injury back in December but did little to convince in the second half of last season, netting just once in 16 appearances to prompt new manager Marco Silva to spend £50 million on Richarlison.
And while he maybe wasn’t at his best last term, there is no doubting that Bolasie could prove to be a menace in the Championship such is his incredible turn of pace, and overall desire to take defenders on.
The DR Congo international earned a move to Everton as a result of impressing at Crystal Palace, in which time the winger netted 13 goals and laid on 30 assists in 144 appearances for the Eagles, so while his goal-scoring record wasn’t great, he was constantly creating opportunities for his teammates.
And having lost Adama Traore to Wolves earlier this month, Pulis knows that replacing Bolasie would go some way to replacing the 22-year-old.
Ultimately, many would argue that the Everton man is too good for the Championship, but at this stage of his career after struggling to hit the heights following injury, it could be an ideal move for him, and indeed for Middlesbrough.
Add in what Besic brought to the team last season, and as such what impact he may have this time round as well, and sealing a double deal for the Everton stars could prove to be a transfer masterstroke as the Teessiders seek a return to the Premier League.
