Leeds United will be hosting Norwich City in the Championship on Saturday evening in a game that could have a massive say on the race for promotion from the Championship. Both side’s men between the sticks will need to be at their very best, and in this battle, we’ll be comparing Tim Krul with Kiko Casilla.
Over the recently closed January transfer window, Leeds United added just one player to their already talented squad in the form of Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla. It’s not every day that a Side in the second tier of English football poaches someone from Los Blancos, and it’s now up to Tim Krul to match the standard of the Spaniard when his side travels to Elland Road.
Tim Krul is a goalkeeper that every Premier League football fan will be familiar with. The Dutchman made a name for himself in the English top flight during his days with Newcastle United, however, since then he’s played in his native Netherlands with Ajax and AZ Alkmaar as well as turning out for Brighton and now finally Norwich, where he’s thriving at Carrow Road.
Krul is only 30-years-old, a relatively young age for a goalkeeper, and with eight caps for his country, he’ll be desperate to perform in the Championship to get his side into the Premier League, an environment where he’ll be more internationally recognised for his performances. So far, he’s doing a fine job at that too, as he’s kept eight clean sheets in 29 Championship appearances as Daniel Farke’s side continue to fly high.

It’s always hard to judge a player off of just one appearance for their new club, but a lot of the Whites have already taken to Kiko Casilla. The Spanish shot-stopper was dropped down to the third choice at the Bernabeu when they signed Thibaut Courtois, and a move away was always likely. Since that move, he’s been on the winning side against Rotherham and showed just what he can do with a couple of smart stops.
The Spanish goalkeeper has been lucky enough to win a cap for his national side and has had an impressive career turning out for Los Blancos as well as Espanyol, where he enjoyed his best form, however, he’s now entering a new chapter in his career in England, and has settled in well. The 32-year-old picked up a booking for time-wasting on his Leeds debut, and the fans already love him for that alone.
TT GRADE: A+
Whilst Tim Krul is certainly a top goalkeeper who is performing above and beyond at Championship level, it’s hard to look past Casilla. It was a bold move in the first place from Marcelo Bielsa to look to bring the Real Madrid man, and it looks like that boldness will pay off as the Whites look like they’re destined to go on and enjoy a promotion winning season.
