Nottingham Forest picked up a vital three points against Cardiff in midweek and former player Steve Hodge picked out one player he thought was key to victory.
A number of players proved their significance – Matty Cash was selected in the WhoScored Championship Team of the Week, for example – but it was Watson who stood out for Hodge.
He battled well throughout but also displayed leadership qualities, as he has done for most of the campaign to help Forest into fourth place in the table. Speaking to BBC Radio Nottinghamshire after the match, Hodge said: “Ben Watson was quietly superb.
“He’s just a clever performer nowadays and I thought the players ahead of him because of how well he was playing tonight they enjoyed getting forward into pockets and creating things.”
Hodge also praised the entire Forest team for their hard-fought display and suggested that they are brilliant away from home due to the battling spirit that Watson characterises.
The captain on the night made three tackles to demonstrate that, while he also served his team well with three interceptions and two successful long balls, per WhoScored.
As well as Tuesday, Watson has also made a significant contribution in away wins at Brentford and Fulham as well as the draws with West Brom and Leeds, proving he is a big-game player.
That could be vital if Forest enter the play-offs, for if he can help the team sneak a good result in the away leg, then the play-off final could await, with the City Ground atmosphere a factor that could possibly influence a positive outcome in the home match.
Fans have recently spoken of how Samba Sow is missed when he is unavailable but it is fortunate that the Reds haven’t had to experience Watson’s absence, due to the 34-year-old not missing a single league game this term.
He is so reliable for Sabri Lamouchi and if he can maintain his form until the end of the season, he may be able to spur the team on to promotion.
