The 72, via Bet Victor, are reporting that Nottingham Forest are now amongst the favourites to sign Jermain Defoe this summer.
The short odds being offered have prompted speculation that Forest could be preparing a bid for the Premier League veteran.
The arrival of a striker with 162 top flight goals would certainly excite the fans at the City Ground, and he is certainly still capable of bagging some more at Championship level.
As Aitor Karanka is preparing his Forest squad for a sustained promotion push, he’ll likely need to add another striker to his ranks. He has already purchased one striker from Bournemouth this summer in the form of Lewis Grabban, taking this second pick from the Cherries would be a mistake though.
Grabban has almost certainly been brought in to lead the line for Forest this season, but in terms of out and out strikers, Karanka could do with some more quality strength in depth.
At 35, Daryl Murphy can’t be relied upon to be a regular contributor at this level; despite his quality, Ben Brereton is only 19 and lacks experience and consistency; Zach Clough has been struggling for form for a long time; and Apostolos Vellios simply doesn’t look cut out for scoring goals at this level.
Defoe is a quality striker, but at 35, not the one Forest need. Following the addition of Grabban, the only forwards at the club currently aged between 20 and 30 are Clough and Vellios – who both have big question marks hanging over them.
Forest need another footballer in his prime. Someone who can go toe to toe with Grabban for the right to start every match. Having two such strikers in the side should help get the best out of both of them.
Defoe is no longer that player, so Karanka should avoid paying the big wages that the ex-England international would likely command, and focus instead on making a wiser investment.
