Nottingham Forest certainly don’t look like they’re going anywhere fast, so Jack Colback should jump ship and try and break into a Premier League team again, before it’s too late.
The 29-year-old has a year left on his contract at Newcastle and has spent the season on loan in the Championship. He surely accepts he has no future at St James’ Park under Rafael Benitez, but he could still try and make it at another Premier League club.
Who knows, with Benitez’s contract on the verge of expiring, he could even find himself with a chance of breaking into that team next season.
Whatever happens, he should leave Forest and try to force a move elsewhere in the top flight.
At his age, time is running out to get to a big club and make an impression. Yes, it’s important he plays regular football, but he’ll still believe he has what it takes to play for a newly promoted club at least. That belief should take him away from the City Ground.
He’s out for the remaining games of the campaign through suspension, so now’s the time for his agent to be snooping around top-flight teams, putting him in the shop window. He’s played 37 times in the league this season, scoring three and assisting two, so is by no means done.
The defensive midfielder should assess his options and try and broker a low-fee move to one of the promoted sides, where he can use his experience to his advantage. If he plays well then he’s back in the big time and he can put Benitez and Newcastle behind him once and for all.
