After a pretty underwhelming start to the season, things have picked up for Nottingham Forest in their last couple of games following victories over Sheffield Wednesday and most recently Rotherham.
And Aitor Karanka’s men will be looking to carry that momentum into their third round Carabao Cup clash when they take on fellow Championship side Stoke City tonight in a game which could provide a great opportunity to Diogo Goncalves.
Goncalves arrived from Benfica on loan back in the summer with many supporters expecting big things from the talented Portuguese forward.
£2.25m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Goncalves, however, has yet to make much of an impact at the City Ground, although Karanka has recently come out to speak of the 21-year-old’s importance to the team.
Speaking after Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 win against Rotherham at home last Saturday, Karanka told the Nottingham Post: “Yes, he [Goncalves] is an important player for us still.
“He is important for me. But it is also true that the players like Ben Osborn, Matty Cash, Joao Carvalho, Gil Dias and Joe Lolley are playing really well for us. So he knows that he needs to wait for his chance.”
And there may not be a better chance than tonight in the League Cup against Stoke for the Portugal U21 international.
Against another Championship side, if Goncalves can put in a good performance, then it will give Karanka something to think about going forward. And the tricky winger, without a doubt, has the ability to do so.
Brilliant in 1v1 situations thanks to his pace and dribbling ability, Goncalves has the tools to hurt a Stoke defence still trying to find their feet under Gary Rowett and, ultimately, fire Nottingham Forest into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.Like what the TT have on offer?
