Report: Out-of-favour QPR defender joins Kilmarnock on loan
QPR defender Niko Hamalainen has joined Scottish club Kilmarnock on a season-long loan.
The left-back has failed to break into the team during his time at the club, and having spent the latter half of last season in his native United States, the 22-year-old will seek some first-team action by linking up with the Scottish Premiership side.
Joining the Hoops’ youth ranks in 2014, Hamalainen has only featured six times in QPR colours since his first appearance for the club in 2016, while he was selected just twice during the whole of last season – before spending a short spell at Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer.
But Florida-born Hamalainen even found game time hard to come by in the US, with just 95 minutes of football to his name as he started just once for the MLS outfit during his three-month loan.
His loan move to Rugby Park suggests he may yet have a future at QPR, despite his previous record suggesting otherwise. But having joined the club from a young age, perhaps there is a promise that has yet to be delivered upon by Hamalainen himself.
A run of games for Kilmarnock would certainly help that, with Hamalainen amassing a total of 11 appearances in senior football since 2015.
Opportunities are presumably still thought to be scarce for the youngster at QPR despite the change in management – perhaps in light of the arrival of Lee Wallace from Rangers – with Ryan Manning selected to fulfil the position in his absence as the Scotsman nears full match fitness.
So with all things considered, another fresh start for Hamalainen could be just what he needs to kickstart his career.
