When Billy Sharp hobbled off in Sheffield United’s 1-1 draw against Millwall on April 13th, you would have forgiven the club’s supporters for thinking that their automatic promotion hopes were all but over.
As a result of slipping up against the Lions, the Blades fell three points behind Leeds United in the Championship standings with just four games of the season left to play and needed one of their players to step-up in the absence of their top-scorer.
Knowing that his side could ill-afford to drop any more points, David McGoldrick accepted the challenge of filling the void left by Sharp. After providing an assist in last Friday’s 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, the 31-year-old backed up his performance by delivering a masterclass on Monday against Hull City.
Heading into the clash level on points with Leeds following Marcelo Bielsa’s side’s shock 2-1 defeat against Wigan Athletic, United knew that they could place an immense amount of pressure on their Yorkshire rivals by beating the Tigers.
In what was a stunning first-half tirade at the KCOM Stadium, McGoldrick fired in an unstoppable header to give his side the lead before curling in a wonderful effort from 25-yards as he took the game away from the Blades’ opponents.
A third goal scored by Enda Stevens secured a vital three points for United which was made even sweeter by Leeds’ 2-0 loss at Brentford.
With Chris Wilder’s men knowing that a victory on Saturday against Ipswich Town could secure their long-awaited return to the Premier League, it would not be at all surprising if McGoldrick is the player that scores the goal that gets them there.
The £1.35m-rated forward (via Transfermarkt) has already found the back of the net on 15 occasions this year and would love to add to his tally against a Tractor Boys side who released at the end of last season.
