It is going to go right down to the wire, isn’t it Sheffield United fans?
The Blades’ draw against Birmingham City on Wednesday saw the club squander the chance to move above automatic promotion rivals Leeds United. Currently third in the Championship, Chris Wilder’s side have five games left to usurp the Whites and secure a return to the top tier of English football after 12 years away. If they cannot do this, they will have to instead settle for the play-offs, a competition which they do not have a good relationship with in recent years.
To ensure that they have the best possible chance of finishing in the top-two in May, the Blades simply cannot afford to slip up against Millwall on Saturday in what is expected to be an enthralling clash. Whereas United are experiencing a season to remember this year, the Lions are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the second tier.
Although they are currently three positions above the bottom three, Neil Harris’ side are nowhere near safe and are sure to give Wilder’s side a real challenge to overcome at the weekend.
In theory, giving the contrasting fortunes of the two sides this year, United should enter the game as clear favourites yet at this stage of a campaign, there are no certainties whatsoever, especially in the Championship. Despite the fact that they are storming towards the Premier League this season, leaders Norwich City drew 2-2 a Reading side who are in the exactly the same position as Millwall are.
Therefore, the Blades must be at full throttle at Bramall Lane to ensure that they claim all three points and put all the pressure back on Leeds United ahead of their match against Sheffield Wednesday.
