Sheffield United are right in the mix at the top of the Championship and are there on merit, with the Blades delivering some fine displays under Chris Wilder.
The red and white half of Sheffield can be proud of their efforts, however, a similar display last season lead to nothing in the end, and a lot of people look to the January window as a big turning point in the Blades’ downfall into the mid-table positions.
However, this time around, you simply cannot say that Wilder has not been allowed to go out and get his men.
With the additions of Gary Madine, Kieran Dowell, and Scott Hogan, Wilder has added genuine quality to the ranks, and players who will make a massive difference to the Blades as they seek a place in the top two, and at minimum, a top six finish.
In Madine, United have a genuine big man who can turn a game on it’s head, while Dowell comes with a rocket of a left foot and experience from playing with Nottingham Forest last season.
The signing of Hogan shows United are a force to be reckoned with too, and can attract players on big money at big clubs. Hogan therefore will be hoping to hit the ground running and smash in the goals which haven’t been forthcoming at Villa Park.
While plenty of the Championship added quality, it’s hard to argue that United didn’t do the best of the bunch in terms of what they needed, and how they addressed it.
All they need now is for Wilder to work his magic for a few more months, and a Premier League place might well beckon for the Bramall Lane club.
