When Jordan Rhodes arrived at Hillsborough on a permanent deal from Middlesbrough in 2017, Sheffield Wednesday’s supporters had every right to be excited given the Scotland international’s previous track-record.
A prolific goalscorer during his spells with Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers, the 29-year-old seemingly had all the ingredients needed to become a hero for the Owls.
However, despite showing glimmers of promise last season against the likes of Aston Villa and Millwall, Rhodes was very disappointing for Wednesday as he only managed to find the back of the net on five occasions in the Championship.
With then-Owls boss Jos Luhukay preferring a strike partnership of Lucas Joao and Steven Fletcher, the former Boro forward decided to agree to a loan move to Norwich City at the start of the current campaign as he looked to revive his career.
A bright start to his stint at Carrow Road saw Rhodes score in two of his first three games yet it has been somewhat of a struggle since as the emergence of Teemu Pukki has limited him to a whole host of substitute appearances for the Canaries.
Having contributed very little to Daniel Farke’s side’s promotion push, it is overwhelmingly clear to see that he is struggling to cope with the competitiveness of the Championship and therefore it would be wise for Steve Bruce to cut ties with the £4.5m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) in the summer.
Considering the fact that the 58-year-old has no fewer than seven strikers to choose from at Hillsborough, it would be a waste to keep Rhodes at the club if he has no chance of featuring next season.
Although it is fair to say that he is a shadow of his former self, Rhodes’ previous escapades could still attract a healthy fee which could be used to strengthen other areas of Wednesday’s squad heading into the 2019/20 campaign.
What do you think Owls fans? Should Bruce sell Rhodes in the summer? Or is it worth giving the forward another chance to impress next season? Let us know below.
