Sheffield Wednesday: Steve Bruce must resist letting Bannan leave in the summer

Sheffield Wednesday: Steve Bruce must resist letting Bannan leave in the summer - Championship

Having conceded a heartbreaking last-minute equaliser against Norwich City last Friday, Sheffield Wednesday would have been forgiven by their supporters for being downbeat for yesterday’s clash with Bristol City.

However, since the arrival of Steve Bruce in January, a unity between the club’s players has been forged which has allowed them to bounce back almost immediately after suffering a setback. Therefore, rather than completely giving up hope of securing a top-six finish at the end of the season, the Owls instead responded in fine style at Hillsborough.

At the heart of everything positive for Wednesday was Barry Bannan who delivered an incredible performance against the Robins. The Scottish midfielder kicked off proceedings by firing in a spectacular long-range strike to give his side the lead before producing a spell-binding pass for Lucas Joao who then finished with aplomb.

Although the Owls failed to add to their tally in the second-half, Bannan’s ability to dictate the play allowed the club to seal a vital victory which kept their dreams of making the play-offs alive heading into next week’s clash with Preston North End.

The way that the 29-year-old stepped up to the mark for his team against City illustrated just why Bruce should do everything he can to keep him at the Yorkshire-based outfit for next season.

By setting up Joao on Monday, Bannan reached double figures for the campaign in terms of assists, a total which has only be bettered by four other players in the Championship this season. A vital asset for Wednesday in terms of attacking creativity, it is clear that in order to be successful over the coming years, the club must build a squad that will give him the best chance to thrive.

Indeed, if Bannan (valued at £2.7m by Transfermarkt) continues to deliver impressive displays for the Owls, it would not be at all surprising if he is subject to interest from elsewhere and so it is important that Bruce resists any temptation to sell him in the summer.
