Dodged Bullet: Fernando Forestieri and Sheffield Wednesday

Dodged Bullet: Fernando Forestieri and Sheffield Wednesday - Sheffield Wednesday

The transfer window can sometimes provide clubs with an excellent opportunity to make some much-needed changes to their side, however, Sheffield Wednesday may have benefitted from a decision they made in more ways than one.

According to a report by The Sun back in the summer of 2017, Fulham were eying up a move for star Fernando Forestieri and were looking to take advantage of the situation that had arisen.

It had been claimed that the forward had fallen out with staff at Hillsborough and the west London outfit were keen to see if the Owls would take an offer of £12million to take the Argentine-Italian off their hands.

However, Wednesday are thought to have wanted more than the quoted figure and, obviously, a move never materialised.

And, as the season had turned out, the fact that a sale never happened may have benefitted them more than they could have imagined and truly helped them to dodge a bullet.

Forestieri may have missed the majority of that campaign with a serious knee injury, however, he has since shown just how good of a footballer he is and he has become vital to Sheffield Wednesday in the time he has been at the club.

Making just ten Championship appearances that season, he found the back of the net five times and helped ease any relegation fears the Owls may have had that year as they spent much of the second half of the campaign flirting with relegation.

Fast forward to the current Championship competition and Forestieri has continued to have an impact, albeit rather a rather inconsistent one.

The 29-year-old may have only netted five so far in his 23 appearances in England’s second tier, however, he has popped up with some significant goals – including one at the weekend against Preston.

He continues to struggle with injuries, whilst ill-discipline has also cost his side of his talent this season, but if it were not for his exploits in the last campaign, Sheffield Wednesday might well have found themselves playing League One football this year. In that sense, maybe keeping him has proven to be a bit of a dodged bullet.

Sheffield Wednesday fans, how pleased are you that Forestieri was not sold in the summer of 2017? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
