Frankly, these two Sheffield Wednesday men had a shocking weekend

Sheffield Wednesday came up against league leaders Middlesborough in the EFL Championship’s Friday night game at Hillsborough.

A few factors should have been considered before heading into this game. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, Middlesborough arrived with the strongest defensive record in the league, having only conceded 7 goals in 13 games. Sheffield Wednesday, on the other hand, have leaked a total of 20 goals in the same amount of time.

Both teams command a pretty decent scoring record, as well, with the 1st place side finding the net a total of 16 times, and Sheffield Wednesday actually trumping them on this occasion with 20 recorded goals.

That said, we were expecting goals, and the game delivered. Middlesborough took the lead through a nicely finished shot from Mo Besic in the 49th minute and then doubled their tally with a record-breaking strike from Britt Assombalonga in the 55th. Against the run of play, Adam Reach clawed one back for the home side in the 89th minute; however he was unable to inspire a late comeback as the game closed 2-1.

Sheffield Wednesday’s defensive frailties were exposed throughout the game and the match ratings reflect that. Here are two players who didn’t play their best game on Friday night…

Tom Lees

Needless to say, the defender had a bit of a shocker against Middlesborough, having achieved a rating of 4 out of 10 according to Sky Sports.

After giving possession away cheaply on the halfway line, Lees was forced to watch Mo Besic unselfishly pass the ball past a helpless Cameron Dawson into the path of Britt Assombalonga who comfortably slotted it home to make it 2-0.

His performance before the mistake wasn’t sparkling and, following his shocking error, things didn’t seem to get any better.

Jordan Thorniley

Another player who didn’t turn up on the night, and a key player in a Sheffield Wednesday defence that has suffered too many goals in general this season, the English centre-back was bullied by the strength and speed of Britt Assombalonga throughout the game without any real response. Really not his day.
