Sheffield Wednesday have been on an abysmal run of form of late but there are some reasons out of their control that could well be to blame.
Indeed, there are several first-term players currently out injured, including top scorer Steven Fletcher and January Player of the Month winner Morgan Fox. As well as that pair, Adam Reach, Moses Odubajo and Massimo Luongo have all missed the last four games at least, and Garry Monk has issued an update on their fitness levels.
According to the Owls boss (per the Star), the latter trio will all miss Wednesday’s match against Charlton, with the visit of Derby on Saturday also perhaps coming a little too soon for them.
Monk said that all are likely to be unavailable this week which indicates that a return could come soon after, particularly for Reach, about whom he was most optimistic, suggesting that the winger is “going OK” in regard to his comeback.
Reach has played 33 times for the South Yorkshire outfit this term, scoring twice and assisting seven goals, and it is little surprise that his influence has been missed, with Wednesday failing to win from the moment he was injured before the Barnsley clash.
Getting each of the trio back up to speed could prove important in turning fortunes around with added competition possibly leading to improved performances, as well as more options being available generally being a good thing.
Luongo and Odubajo will be expected to improve their performances, however, as they have both failed to nail down a first-team place with nine and 15 league starts respectively, and given their teammates have dropped their standards with one win in 11 league games, they have a good chance to impress and stake a claim to be a regular starter.
