Big things were expected of Jordan Rhodes when he joined Sheffield Wednesday for an eye-watering fee of £9m in 2017, but so far he has fallen some way short of expectations.
He arrived with the reputation as one of the most prolific goalscorers outside of the Premier League, but he since has scored only 13 goals in 71 games for the club.
Garry Monk, too, has been unable to get the 30-year-old to recover his best form, and but for a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest Rhodes would be goalless this season, failing to find the target in his 14 other appearances.
It is little surprise, therefore, that some Sheffield Wednesday fans have grown frustrated, with one fan calling him “useless”. He is reportedly on £40,000 a week (according to Football Insider) but consistently fails to live up to both that and his transfer fee, so it is not shocking to see supporters vent.
The above led to some unsavoury responses yesterday when the club wished Rhodes a happy birthday, with several fans deciding to mock him for what he has shown as a Wednesday player so far.
