Sheffield Wednesday: Keiren Westwood makes revelation about being dropped - Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday are stuck in a difficult situation as off-field matters seem to be affecting performances and results over the last few weeks.

As well as the issue of an EFL investigation into the sale of Hillsborough, Garry Monk has also faced significant criticism for his handling of Sam Hutchinson, while Keiren Westwood has also been dropped. That pair have both been banished to the under-23s and the Owls have struggled, causing some fans to understandably question Monk’s decision-making.

As a result, Westwood has decided to speak out about his omission from the squad and has handled the whole affair with professionalism. In a post on Twitter, he wrote:

“The manager and I have not fallen out. We had a conversation man to man and it was fin. I’m very experienced to know that these things happen in football and it’s never anything personal.

“The manager has made a decision, which I fully accept and respect and I have done since the moment it was made.”

The goalkeeper also issued a need for positivity and togetherness as he reminisced on his six years at the club, notably making the point that “rumours and gossip can cause a split in the fanbase”. Given the hostility towards the likes of Monk and Dejphon Chansiri, it is clear that the 35-year-old is accurate in his assessment of things and hopefully this statement will go some way to cooling tensions between the club and some supporters.

Westwood has taken the right step as it will hopefully stop any speculation regarding him and others at the club but he still hasn’t revealed the reasons behind Monk’s decision to exclude him from the first team.

As a result, there could still be criticism aimed towards Monk for that decision and rightly so if Wednesday continue to underperform and extend their worrying run of form.

Until Monk clears up the reasons behind the omissions of Westwood and Hutchinson, fans will likely continue to vent their frustration at the manager, as so far it is a move that has backfired considerably.

Do you think Westwood has done the right thing in making this statement Wednesday fans and could it help resolve the toxic atmosphere plaguing the club currently? Comment below with your views…
