Having finished in an underwhelming 12th place in the Championship last season, Sheffield Wednesday will be aiming for much better in the 2019/20 campaign.
Yet in order to build the foundations needed for success, manager Steve Bruce must be backed by his chairman Dejphon Chansiri in the upcoming transfer window as a failure to do so could lead to another year of mediocrity.
Whereas the likes of Carlos Carvalhal and Jos Luhukay failed miserably with their recruitment during their respective periods in charge of the Owls, the 58-year-old has an excellent track record of bringing in the right players at the right time.
Although he was relieved of his duties at Aston Villa in October after a poor run of results in the second tier, he deserves some credit for signing the likes of Tammy Abraham, John McGinn and Anwar El-Ghazi as they all played a pivotal role in helping the club secure play-off glory at Wembley Stadium earlier this week
Furthermore, when you consider that Bruce has masterminded no fewer than four promotions from the Championship during his managerial career, he may be the perfect man to end Wednesday’s 20-year wait for Premier League football in 2020.
Given the fact that he was able to successfully steer the Owls away from the daunting prospect of being dragged into a relegation battle last season, with a solid squad of players at his disposal, there is no reason why he cannot secure a top-six finish at the very least next May.
Whilst the likes of Leeds United and Derby County may end up grabbing the headlines over the coming months due to the frenzy surrounding Marcelo Bielsa and Frank Lampard, Bruce’s composed nature could allow Wednesday to sneak quietly into contention next season.
