After a sterling effort over the past three months to try and gatecrash the play-offs, Sheffield Wednesday’s hopes of a top-six finish were finally brought to an end last week following an enthralling 3-3 draw against Preston North End.
Although the club’s supporters have every right to feel some disappointment about how the Owls’ season has panned out, it is clear that the Yorkshire-based outfit are heading in the right direction under Steve Bruce and with the transfer window opening in July, it will be intriguing to see what moves he decides to make.
Following the 58-year-old’s arrival at Hillsborough in January, one player in particular has really come into his own for Wednesday.
Despite suffering with a number of injury issues this season, Fernando Forestieri has shown glimpses of the talent which has allowed him to become somewhat of a cult hero for the Owls with his latest moment of magic occurring last month.
With his side losing 1-0 to Norwich City, the Italian skipped past two Canaries defenders before firing in a breathtaking long-range effort past Tim Krul to level which well and truly silenced his doubters.
By producing an outstanding display against one of the best sides in the Championship, Forestieri outlined that not only should be a regular starter next season but that he should also have a squad built around him in order for him to thrive.
Although this would unquestionably be a risky decision for Bruce to make, if the £4.5m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) can improve his consistency next year through playing alongside individuals who compliment his style, there is no reason why the Owls cannot achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2020.
What do you think Wednesday fans? Should Bruce build a squad to accommodate Forestieri next season? Or is it time for the club to move on from relying on the Italian to deliver the goods? Let us know below.
