It has a been a roller-coaster of a year for Fernando Forestieri, hasn’t it Sheffield Wednesday fans?
The Italian attacker began the 2018/19 campaign in fine form by scoring in consecutive games against Wigan Athletic and Hull City as he was given the opportunity to prove himself by Jos Luhukay up-front.
However, after receiving a three-match ban in September as well as a £25,000 fine by the Football Association for his involvement in a brawl during a pre-season clash at Mansfield Town (via Sky Sports), Forestieri soon fell down the pecking order at Hillsborough.
Having made just six appearances in four months for the Owls, the 29-year-old was finally brought back into the club’s plans by Steve Bruce in February.
After failing to register a goal or an assist against Ipswich Town, Reading and Millwall, Forestieri demonstrated his undeniable talent by getting on the scoresheet against Rotherham United. Yet despite this contribution, the forward’s red card, unfortunately, grabbed all the headlines at the New York Stadium.
Following two months of drifting in and out of the squad, Forestieri finally proved just why Wednesday should do all they possibly can to keep him at the club next season during a clash with Norwich City last month. With his side trailing at Carrow Road, the £4.5m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) drifted past several Canaries defenders before unleashing an unstoppable long-range effort past Tim Krul.
It is this ability to produce moments of magic out of nowhere that could come in handy next season for the Owls as in order to launch a sustained push for promotion, they will need Forestieri to be at his brilliant best.
Therefore, with the club’s future at stake, it is imperative that Bruce doesn’t give in to any temptation to sell the former Watford ace over the coming months. According to The Sun on Sunday (as quoted by HITC), Wednesday’s arch-rivals Sheffield United are reportedly plotting a £14m move for Forestieri when the transfer window opens in July.
If this is indeed true, the Owls should not even consider letting him leave as doing so would almost certainly enrage their supporters. Although receiving a hefty fee for Forestieri could allow Bruce to strengthen in other areas, he would be losing one of the club’s most talented, and best-loved players as a result of this.
