After suffering a narrow defeat to Leeds United on April 13th, it was looking as if Sheffield Wednesday’s dreams of reaching the play-offs next month had been all-but extinguished.
However, with the Championship delivering its fair share of drama over the Easter weekend, the Owls still have a chance, albeit a slim one, of finishing in the top six. To be in this position with two games to go would have been almost unthinkable earlier on this season yet the arrival of Steve Bruce as manager at the turn of the year has completely transformed Wednesday’s fortunes.
By accumulating 28 points from his 16 games in charge, the 58-year-old has created the foundations needed for the club to go on and achieve success in the future. Although it is extremely unlikely that the Owls will be able to overcome the four-point deficit needed for them to overtake sixth-place Derby County in the standings, they have set themselves up to launch a real charge for automatic promotion next year.
In order to emerge as serious contenders over the summer, Bruce must be given the necessary funds to bolster his squad in the transfer window as it is almost certain that the former Aston Villa boss will want to bring in his own players.
Considering the fact that he has achieved promotion to the top flight on no fewer than four occasions during his managerial career, it would not be surprising whatsoever if he can add to another triumph to his CV next year.
For Wednesday’s supporters, they will be hoping that this season’s resurgence in form is just the start to an extremely successful chapter in the club’s illustrious history.
