Having led his side to an impressive 12th place finish in the Championship during the 2018/19 campaign, Steve Bruce will be hoping to go one step better next season with Sheffield Wednesday.
Since taking over at Hillsborough in January, the 58-year-old has completely transformed the Owls’ fortunes as it could be argued that without him, the club could have easily been embroiled in a relegation scrap with the likes of Rotherham United, Millwall and Reading.
Yet having demonstrated glimpses of the direction in which he wants to take Wednesday in during an impressive 11-game unbeaten run in the second tier, Bruce knows that if he can get his recruitment right this summer, there is no reason why he cannot launch a sustained push for automatic promotion.
Although the Owls’ squad would benefit from additions in a number of different positions, one of the areas that the former Aston Villa boss should be prioritising is central midfield.
Despite both Barry Bannan and Joey Pelupessy impressing at times in this particular role, it is clear that Wednesday could benefit massively by bringing in a player who has experienced a considerable amount of success elsewhere during his career.
According to Complete Sports, the Owls are reportedly targeting a move for Middlesbrough midfielder John Obi Mikel whose deal at the Riverside Stadium runs out next month.
A Champions League and Premier League winner during his 11-year stint at Chelsea, the Nigerian international proved that he is still more than capable of performing at a consistent level in England as he started in all 18 of the Smoggies’ league fixtures after joining the club in January.
With over 400 senior appearances to his name, Mikel could prove to be a valuable asset for Bruce’s side if he is convinced to make the switch to Hillsborough as not only is he a fantastic reader of the game but he can also control the tempo of a game if required.
By securing the £3.15m-rated star’s services (via Transfermarkt) when the transfer window opens in July, the Owls will be making a huge upgrade to their midfield options which could end up resulting in the club returning to the Premier League in 2020.
What do you think Wednesday fans? Should Bruce go all-out to try and bring in Mikel? Or this another midfielder you would like to see your club sign this summer? Let us know below.
