Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed that defender Tom Lees is making good progress in his return from injury, but is unlikely to feature against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
The 28-year-old has been out of action since picking up a hamstring injury in the warm-up ahead of the Owls’ fixture against Queens Park Rangers, with his last appearance coming in their 2-1 defeat against Preston North End back in August.
While it is doubtful that he will play any part against the Latics, manager Garry Monk has given a positive update regarding his captain and insists that he is not far away from first-team football.
Speaking to the official Sheffield Wednesday website, Monk said: “He [Lees] was out on the pitch on Thursday, so we’ll have a good look at him. He’s not yet on to full contact, he’s out there training and ticking all the boxes so we’ll see on Friday.
“Will the weekend come at a push? Probably. If he would come back for this weekend, it would more than likely be for the bench so we probably won’t risk him with the break coming up. But he is progressing well and everyone else in the squad is fine.”
Having Lees back should be a major boost to the Owls, with the former Leeds United centre-back having been their linchpin in the backline for a few years now.
However, it may not be a case of him walking straight back into the starting 11 as both Dominic Iorfa and Julian Borner have been impressive at the heart of defence recently. They have helped the team win two and draw one of their last five matches, so Lees may have to be patient in earning back his place in the side.
