Sheffield Wednesday: Dom Howson highlights what Garry Monk must improve on - Sheffield Wednesday

In his latest for Yorkshire Live, Dom Howson has listed five things that Garry Monk must do or improve on when the 2020/21 season begins.

The Wednesday reporter has highlighted the manager’s current season and how rapidly the team went from third to 15th in the Championship table.

The Owls have lost nine of their last 14 matches and have won just once in their last 10 fixtures across all competitions (via SWFC.co.uk). Some fans have lashed out at Monk’s fall from grace this campaign, with many calling for him to be sacked in the summer. Howson has approached the areas of concern the 41-year-old must tackle, including Wednesday’s poor defensive performances.

“They have been inexplicably poor defensively and it is down to Monk to make them harder to beat and play against if the Owls are given the opportunity to complete their league programme,” Howson wrote.

Is Garry Monk the right man for Sheffield Wednesday?

No

The Owls are currently looking at 17 senior players who could all be leaving Hillsborough this summer – with 12 out of contract and five nearing the end of their respective loan deals (as per Yorkshire Live). This is another alarm bell in Wednesday’s squad and Howson is urging Monk to make swift decisions on the future of these players and start looking for new personnel to add to the ranks.

So far this campaign, Sheffield Wednesday have conceded 49 league goals – their biggest losses coming from two humiliating 5-0 defeats against Blackburn and, most recently, Brentford (as per Transfermarkt).

If the Owls are to resurrect this season and go into 2020/21 in good spirits, Monk must utilise this transfer window and make the absolute best of it. His defence is a huge area of concern and the chance to rectify this lies solely in the summer window, or else anything beyond that may be too late to ensure the safety of his job.
