In his latest Q&A session, Dom Howson has delivered a brutal verdict on the current Sheffield Wednesday squad.
The Yorkshire Live journalist hosted a Q&A segment and answered some burning questions posed by Owls fans. One supporter asked who Howson would like to see given a contract extension, on the topic of Morgan Fox and Steven Fletcher due to pen their future.
“I would like to see Wednesday keep Matt Penney,” Howson replied. “I think he is a player with a lot of potential. I know he has not set the world alight in Germany but I am sure he will have learned a lot from the experience.
“Other than Penney, Fox and Fletcher down to new contracts, I think I would say goodbye to the rest. It is an ageing squad and the time has come for a big shake-up.”
Wednesday have been struggling this season under Garry Monk as they currently sit 15th in the Championship table. The Owls have registered just one win in their last ten matches across all competitions, including their most recent result which was a humiliating 5-0 loss to Brentford.
The Owls have nine recognised senior players who are aged 30 or above, with another two players aged 29. Fletcher, 33, is the only veteran to be performing well on paper, boasting 13 goals and two assists which puts him way out in front in the Wednesday top scorers list.
Is Garry Monk the right man for Sheffield Wednesday?
Howson’s call for a revamp in the squad will likely become a reality as a whopping 17 players are due to see their contracts expire this summer (via Transfermarkt). This is more than half of Wednesday’s registered senior squad.
Unless the club opt to put new deals on the table, a large chunk of the first team could be leaving as free agents in the next window.
