Sheffield Wednesday: Fans blame Garry Monk for heavy defeat

Many of the Sheffield Wednesday fans were fuming with Garry Monk after they witnessed their side collapse to Blackburn Rovers in front of a home crowd on Saturday afternoon.
Having witnessed their side upset Leeds United in their Yorkshire derby last weekend (BBC), they would have surely been keen to have built on that impressive result when the Ewood Park outfit came to visit. However, things could not have been further different from the script the Owls would have written prior to the encounter, with Lewis Holtby opening the scoring.
Massimo Luongo was then shown a red card before Blackburn opened the floodgates via the help of a Cameron Dawson own goal and a second by the former Tottenham Hotspur man. Darragh Lenihan made it four before Sam Gallagher just added further salt into the wound when he made it 5-0 just before the final whistle (BBC).
Indeed, fans were quite rightly fuming with the result and the performance they saw from their players, however Monk appeared to take the brunt of the blame from many of those on social media. The Hillsborough outfit’s manager was handed significant criticism for his tactics and team selection, with one supporter going as far as to say that he was the only person at fault for the Owls.
Some even suggested that he got his tactics wrong, whilst a couple of others made the claim that his decisions regarding substitutions were ‘a joke’.
Here are just some of their reactions…
Today was a total embarrassment Monk, your fault, no one else, performance was our standard, not Leeds or Brighton. Average at best, it’s your job to sort it it out, most of this squad should be exited at the first opportunity and then start again. New lad hung out to dry

I wasn’t completely behind monks appointment and his team tactics originally but I’ve decided he is a complete idiot and I definitely can’t get my head round his team he selected today … embarrassing yet again

Monk surely has to hold his hands up and admit fault for that defeat. Tactically inept from the word go #swfc

Your team selection. Your tactics. Mistakes from early season being repeated with same results. 1 up front at home is not acceptable. There are no excuses

Regardless of if it was a red, we were a shambles today. An absolute disgrace. And bringing on 2 defencive players at HT when we are 3-0 down to then go on and concede 2 more goals is a total joke.
I feel sorry for anyone that stayed to the end and endured that for 90+ #swfc— TK (@TomKing89) January 18, 2020
Who sets the tone, the manager sets the tone, poor team selection and negative tactics. Two good results prior, but not two good performances, most performances under monk been poor, we’re reaping what we sow, #MonkOut
