Massimo Luongo was the hero at Hillsborough on Tuesday, with his goal proving enough for Sheffield Wednesday to beat Stoke City in the Championship (via BBC Sport).
Has Julian Börner been better than Michael Hector?
The Owls won the game 1-0, a result which sent them into third place at the time of writing (BBC Sport).
Australian midfielder Luongo is enjoying his first season at Sheffield Wednesday having joined from Queens Park Rangers in the summer transfer window.
He initially struggled to get into the team, and didn’t make a single start for the Owls in his first nine games at the club (Transfermarkt).
However, he was put into the starting 11 against Wigan Athletic earlier in October, and he has started each game since (WhoScored).
And it would be fair to say that the former Swindon Town man has taken his opportunity in the first team. Indeed he scored the winning goal against Wigan a few weeks ago and he has now added to that with another winner against Stoke (WhoScored).
That means that he has effectively gained the club four points recently, and he is quickly becoming a favourite amongst the Wednesday fans.
Plenty of them were full of praise for the midfielder on Twitter after the game, here is what some of them had to say…
I’m sure I told you a few weeks ago Luongo could be our missing link 🤔😉#swfc

If we’re ever going to progress we need goal scoring midfielders. Nice to see Luongo scoring again. #swfc

Luongo in general having a very good game. The game is lacking tempo and intensity, and as I noted when we first signed him, his ability to break lines and carry the ball is vital (https://t.co/oeeqWHgnSd). It’s like having the Kieran Lee of old, playing off Fletcher. #swfc

Solid yet again Luongo
