Sheffield Wednesday have provided an update on the injury status of their striker Steven Fletcher.
The Scottish international missed the Owls’ 1-0 defeat against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium on Tuesday after he picked up an ankle injury in their win against Middlesbrough.
However, manager Garry Monk has said that the former Sunderland and Burnley man could recover in time for their home clash with Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
Speaking to the official Sheffield Wednesday website about Fletcher’s injury after they were beaten in Humberside, Monk said: “It was obviously a blow for us and a big miss. He had a kick on his ankle on Saturday, he came in on Sunday and it had swollen up.
“He wasn’t ready for this game but the physios are very hopeful that he will be available for Saturday.”
News that Fletcher could be back for their next Championship game will likely come as music to the ears of Owls supporters.
Indeed, the 32-year-old has been one of their standout players so far this term and is their leading goalscorer with five goals in just 10 appearances.
Here is how some Sheffield Wednesday fans reacted to the news that Fletcher could feature against Wigan Athletic at Hillsborough on Saturday…
I think yesterday showed just how much we need him back. The team didn’t look the same without him. Really poor performances from both strikers yesterday as well. Frustrating when players get opportunities and don’t take them. Can only look at themselves.
