Sheffield Wednesday have confirmed on their official website that Matt Penney is going on a season-long loan to St. Pauli.
This will be the 21-year-old’s third loan spell away from Hillsborough, with his others being at Bradford City and then Mansfield Town, as per Transfermarkt.
Penney made his debut for the Owls last season when he came on for the final 27 minutes of a 2-0 Carabao Cup first-round win against Sunderland.
He then went on to make another 16 Championship appearances across the 2018/19 campaign, getting an assist to help the Owls towards a 2-1 win against Reading.
However, he didn’t get on the pitch in any of the side’s final 27 league games, only making the bench for four of those – facing 19 games in a row with no involvement at all.
The 21-year-old also hasn’t made the bench for any of the four games Lee Bullen’s side have played so far this campaign.
It wouldn’t do Penney’s development any good to be in a position where he is struggling to even make the bench, so it is a smart move to let him go out on loan.
Getting him abroad rather than going down to League One or League Two is also a good decision, as it will be a new experience he can learn from, playing the likes of VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV and Hannover 96.
