Sheffield Wednesday must truly improve on problem position to realise promotion dream

Sheffield Wednesday fans in the Transfer Tavern will be hoping the Owls spend some money this summer, as they aim for a better season and to become the dominant side in the Steel City once again.

The Blue & White half of Sheffield suffered last season. Losing 4-2 at home to bitter rivals at home to Sheffield United in September set the tone for what was to be a sub-par season. Wednesday also disposed of Carlos Carvalhal halfway through the season, such was the poor form of the Hillsborough side.

The Owls will have to invest to improve on a 15th placed Championship finish. So far, there has been a worrying lack of transfer activity coming from the club.

Sheffield Wednesday possess much attacking talent at the club. Atdhe Nuhiu, Steven Fletcher, Gary Hooper, Lucas Joao, the list of Championship quality strikers in endless at Hillsborough. Even if Jordan Rhodes does exit the South Yorkshire club, as has been rumoured, they likely have what they need in attack.

What the Owls do lack is creativity. Barry Bannan is a skillful player, but he only managed three Championship assists last season. Jos Luhakey must add players with creativity to the squad, to give service to the attacking talent the club have at their disposal. The club also have an ageing midfield. David Jones, Kieran Lee, Almen Abdi and George Boyd are all aged 30 or over, some younger talent through the door at Hillsborough certainly wouldn’t go amiss.

Landlords Review

Sheffield Wednesday are a big club, and Wednesdayites will be hoping to see a marked improvement on last year’s shoddy showing. A creative midfielder joining up with the Owls is an absolute must, if the club are going to challenge at the right end of the Championship in the coming campaign.
