Sheffield Wednesday: Owls boss Steve Bruce edging ever closer to Newcastle United move

Despite having only taken over the reins at Sheffield Wednesday in January, Steve Bruce may be about to leave the club this summer to join Newcastle United.

Initially linked with the managerial vacancy at St. James’ Park on Wednesday (via BBC Sport), the 51-year-old has since held talks with the Magpies about a switch (via the Daily Mirror).

According to the Star, Bruce reportedly informed the Owls’ hierarchy about his desire to lead Newcastle, who are his boyhood club, in the Premier League with the two sides now discussing a compensatory financial package thought to be in excess of £1m.

With Wednesday scheduled to kick-off their new Championship campaign in 23 days with a visit to Reading on August 3rd, this news couldn’t have come at a worse time for the club.

Although he has only been in charge of the Owls for six months, Bruce has already made a considerable impact at Hillsborough as he took his side from 16th to 12th in the Championship standings by avoiding defeat in 15 of his first 18 games at the helm (via Transfermarkt).

Whereas Wednesday did tail off somewhat towards the end of the 2018/19 campaign, winning just one of their final five fixtures (via WhoScored), the former Aston Villa boss had demonstrated enough promise to suggest that he could be the man to finally bring their hiatus from the Premier League to an end.

Yet if he does indeed leave South Yorkshire for Newcastle over the coming days, there is no guarantee that the Owls will be able to cope in his absence as before he arrived at Hillsborough, the club looked to be going nowhere as they struggled for wins.
