It has been quite a remarkable turn-around in recent months at Sheffield Wednesday, hasn’t it?
The Owls were 12 points adrift of the play-offs when Jos Luhukay was sacked in December yet a resurgence under Steve Bruce has led to supporters being able to dream of a top-six finish after a disastrous start to the 2018/19 campaign.
Yet in order to negotiate the three-point gap between Wednesday and Derby County, who currently hold the final position in the play-off race, the Yorkshire-based outfit may have to sacrifice their unbeaten run in order to go all-out for victories in their final seven games.
Bruce’s side have not lost since he took charge of his first game in February, winning five and drawing six of their last eleven fixtures. Although a resilience in defence has seen the Owls become incredibly tough to break down, a reliance on playing on the counter-attack away from home has limited their progress in terms of rising up the Championship table. With 56 points to their name already, Wednesday are safe from relegation and so can afford to lose a game or two if it means that they win all of their other remaining fixtures. Whereas three wins and four draws would extend their run to 18 unbeaten under Bruce, five wins and two losses would see them finishing on a higher amount of points (71) which could see them sneak into the play-offs at the end of the season.
The Owls also face the prospect of playing other sides who are in the reckoning for a top-six finish and so by beating the likes of Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, they will be able to narrow the gap before they face the daunting back-to-back clashes of Norwich City and Leeds United, who are both fighting for automatic promotion.
