There was plenty of excitement around Hillsborough in the summer of 2016 when Sheffield Wednesday secured the services of Almen Abdi from Watford.

The Owls reportedly paid the Hornets £3.42 million for the Swiss international (Transfermarkt), and at the time it seemed like a statement signing.

After all, Abdi had just played a full season in the Premier League with Watford, making 32 appearances in total including 25 starts and scoring a couple of goals (Transfermarkt).

He began life at Sheffield Wednesday as a first-choice midfielder, and started in six of their opening eight Championship matches in the 2016/17 campaign (Transfermarkt).

However, he was dropped to the bench for their ninth match of the season against Nottingham Forest and following that he made just nine more appearances that year (Transfermarkt).

The following season he played even fewer minutes. He made just four league appearances in the entire of the 2017/18 campaign as injuries plagued him (Transfermarkt).

Abdi didn’t manage to overcome the injury problems he had the following year either, in 2018/19 he didn’t play a single minute for the Owls and he was subsequently allowed to leave the club on a free transfer (

The Swiss remains a free agent now, highlighting the fall from grace he has endured following his move to Hillsborough.

In total he managed to make just 23 appearances during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, scoring one goal (Transfermarkt).

Looking back, the Owls definitely wasted £3.42 million to bring him to South Yorkshire.
