Speaking in his pre-match press conference (via The Stoke Sentinel,) Mark Hughes has completely denied that Stoke are in for Russian forward Fedor Smolov with our Potters fans here in the Transfer Tavern thinking that’s that done with.
After the player had been quoted by Russian outlet sports.ru earlier this week as saying that the Premier League side were interested in signing him many here in the Transfer Tavern thought that he might be on his way.
Indeed, they liked the sound of that too with the striker scoring 14 goals in 17 games this season for Krasnodar but their manager Hughes has quickly sought to pour cold water to such talk.
The former Manchester United and Chelsea man said of the rumour:
“I’m sure he would like us to be in for him because everybody wants to come to the Premier League.
“But he’s not a player I’ve been made aware of or been told he’s on one of our lists so maybe he’s just trying to drum up some interest.”
Stoke have been in better form in recent weeks after their sluggish start to the campaign and beat Burnley convincingly 2-0 last time out.
They head to title-challenging Arsenal this weekend in a bid to put a dent in their chances whilst also handing a boost to their own ambitions of qualifying for European football this season.
Meanwhile, our landlord thinks they are serious contenders for continental football, too.
