Calciomercato have speculated that Giannelli Imbula may be one of Sampdoria’s targets to replace the Arsenal-bound Lucas Torreira.
Despite a promising start to his career with the Potters, Imbula spent last season on loan away from the Britannia Stadium with Ligue 1 outfit Toulouse. Imbula helped his temporary employers successfully stave off relegation, whilst his parent club weren’t so lucky, meaning that the 25-year-old returned to a Championship club this summer.
Despite his good form in France, it’s unlikely that Imbula has a future with Stoke given they were happy to unload him on a permanent basis last summer but found no suitors for such an arrangement.
Sampdoria may now step in and buy the hard tackling, high energy defensive midfielder to replace the one they just lost.
Alternatively, Darren Moore’s West Brom should offer Imbula a second chance to make his name in England.
Following their relegation, West Brom’s squad is painfully thin, and yet more exits from the Hawthorns look likely. From the midfield department, Jake Livermore could yet be snatched by a Premier League side, which would leave only 37-year-old Gareth Barry and 20-year-old Sam Field as recognised central midfielders in the senior squad.
The loan move bringing Grzegorz Krychowiak to the club last season failed to produce the desired results, and the lack of a truly effective defensive midfielder was a key contributor to the Baggies’ downfall.
Imbula is valued at £5.4 million by Transfermarkt, and if West Brom can find the funds to make a deal happen then he’d be a very astute signing, and one to provide a platform upon which this football team can start building itself back up again – both on the pitch and off it.
