What does the future hold for Jack Butland at Stoke City?

He’s just too good for the Championship, isn’t he? To be fair to Jack Butland, he has displayed incredible professionalism at Stoke City as despite having the ability between the sticks to play for a Premier League side, he has not caused a scene unnecessarily and has always put the shirt first. Still, after a year in the second tier of English football and a mid-table finish for the Potters, it seems the time is right to move on.

Having had numerous Championship loans prior to staking his claim for the number one spot at Stoke City, Butland is well aware of the demands that the League poses.

At 26, despite not being entirely convincing at times this season, his ability to make some remarkable saves at crucial warrants more than starting spot in the division as he has the quality to start for the vast majority of non-top six sides.

The summer transfer window is fast approaching and according to the Daily Mail, Butland is attracting interest from numerous Premier League teams with Watford and Bournemouth reportedly leading the race for his signature.

With lots of talk surrounding his future, that poses the question as to what is next for Butland?

Well, if he wants to have a chance of regaining the England number one jersey from Jordan Pickford, it seems a move to the Premier League is necessary to prove his quality against the other goalkeepers he is competing with.

Since both Watford and Bournemouth’s number one and two ‘keepers are ageing, Butland may provide either side with some quality between the sticks for years to come.

Though, since Ben Foster has been impressive once again this season and the Cherries have Mark Travers eager to prove himself, a move to a club where, perhaps, the goalkeeping situation is also not too straightforward like Crystal Palace could be on the cards, but Vincente Guaita seems to have that nailed down at least for now.

Whatever happens, though, Butland should ensure he manages to get his desired and deserved move away having been a fantastic servant for Stoke, which would allow them to reinvest the money in a new ‘keeper and other areas that need improvement.
