Swansea City have started the season in promising fashion under Graham Potter as they bid to make an instant return to the Premier League, but they remain short of vital depth in central defence.
After impressing in Scandinavia and making plenty of headlines for venturing outside of England in search of a managerial position, Potter has picked up where he left off by collecting 11 points from 6 Championship fixtures.
With Oliver McBurnie providing the firepower in attack, Leroy Fer marshalling the midfield with power and classy technique and Mike van der Hoorn controlling things from the back, the Swans have a solid spine to mount a promotion bid, but their lack of options in defence is a cause for concern.
Van der Hoorn and the promising Joe Rodon have formed a formidable partnership at the back and the presence of Cameron Carter-Vickers should ensure that Potter is well prepared to deal with short term problems.
However, a long-term injury would leave Swansea desperately short of strength in depth, so Potter should do everything in his power to secure a deal for Robert Huth.
Not only would Huth be a valuable defensive option to have within the squad, his rich experience at the highest level would be a huge asset to plenty of the younger players within the squad.
Aston Villa’s decision to sign John Terry last season was one which paid dividends for the Villans in their promotion bid and it’s likely Huth would have a similar impact at the Liberty Stadium.
The big German is a player who is willing to throw his body on the line for the cause, excellent in the air and strong in the tackle, so Potter should make a decisive move into the transfer market to lay the foundations of an unbreakable defence by offering a contract to Huth before a Championship rival swoops in.
