West Brom should push for a Sam Vokes swap deal

West Brom should push for a Sam Vokes swap deal - Championship

According to The Telegraph, West Brom have rejected another bid from Burnley for Jay Rodriguez.

This bid, reportedly worth £16 million, has been rebuffed. However, Burnley are believed to still be interested in pursuing Rodriguez’s signature this summer.

The English striker’s exit from the Hawthorns is beginning to feel like an inevitability, and Darren Moore will be turning his attentions towards identifying an adequate and affordable replacement for the forward.

Rodriguez was the Baggies’ joint top scorer last season, so finding someone capable of reproducing his all-round game and end product will be a tough task.

However, Rodriguez’s arrival at Turf Moor would likely push Sam Vokes even further down the Burnley pecking order and leave the Welshman considering his options. This could open the door for a swap deal, bringing Vokes to West Brom in place of the outbound Rodriguez.

The Breakdown

If Vokes wants to maintain his place in the Wales international set up then he needs regular game time, which he might struggle for with the Clarets next season.

At Championship level though, Vokes could thrive.

His all round game is different to that of Rodriguez’s, with Vokes preferring to operate as more of a target man. With Salmon Rondon also edging closer to a West Brom exit though, according to the Chronicle, a striker in that mould could also soon be in demand at the Hawthorns.

Pushing for a player-plus-cash deal in return for Rodriguez could be Moore’s best option for bringing genuine quality into the club this summer, to make up for the exodus of talent that he has had to endure following West Brom’s relegation from the Premier League last time out.
